This one is hard to put down. A lot of it's set in the Pacific Northwest. The writing is descriptive and colorful; taking us on a journey to many powerfully beautiful locations while giving us time to reflect on the inner wonders of the human soul and the paradigm shifting possibilities that we are all capable of. Definitely an uplifting read!

Alton Spencer has written a philosophical novel on how we can create healthier paradigms for our lives. After falling into the pace of the book and letting myself take this international journey through history, I relaxed and let the story carry me along. The author has a deep knowledge of history, philosophy, religion, and meditation. It was interesting to see these threads woven together into a story about friendship and right use of power. As all good books do, it left me questioning some basic assumptions about the way the world works. Worth a read!

I recommend this book. It wasn't a quick read for me in terms of the storyline, yet the ideas and views offered have shifted to some degree my own perception of reality. Spencer's book is a philosophical novel in the genre of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Through the life and lens of the main character, Edward Slowbe, there is an unfolding discussion and meditation on what it means to be a human; and that this physical body, and this physical world, is just one aspect of an inherently supernatural existence.

My favorite aspect of the book was by far the prose. The writing style was so beautifully descriptive and poetic that the book was hard to put down. Whether the subject was a place or a person or an idea, I felt like I was in the story as an observer. Alton is obviously an extremely talented writer. Philosophy isn't my genre, but the creative ideas and detailed manner of exploring them kept me hooked. The characters were strong and intriguing, and the character development really tied it all together.
